Two club riders have been appointed to the Great Britain Olympic Development squad it was announced last week. Rebbecca James (14) already has an under 16’s National Track Championship to her credit and Jessica Allen (17) is the Junior Womens National Time Trial Champion.
Both riders attended a selection weekend held by British Cycling for olympic hopefuls. They rode extremely well to show that they were two of the best riders in their discipline and for their age in the country. The club wishes them well in their endeavours to compete with (and beat!) the best in the world.
Honorary club member Richard Wooles has been appointed Provincial Coach and High Performance Director at Cycling British Columbia, Canada. [read more]
Abergavenny RC had 10 riders entered in the annual BikeWales ride from Bailey Park on Sunday. A very tough hilly few hours lay ahead for the seven riders of the club who along with the hundreds of other riders attempted the 100-mile ride.
Riding through Usk to Monmouth then up over the Rockfield pitch to Skenfrith and then up to Grosmont, the field rode already breaking up into smaller groups. They then turned for Cross Ash to ride past the start in Bailey Park.
With 50-miles already done the climb of the Tumble beckoning the groups set about the last 50. Over the Tumble across LLangynidr Mountain and then up to Bwlch they rode with ever tiring legs. Riding on over undulating roads to Llangorse and onto Talgarth. Now down to even smaller groups and single riders the field ground its way over the last major obstacle, Pengenfordd, the main road to Crickhowell.
Finally, the last few miles through Gilwern back to Bailey Park. This was an extremely tough and long course and all the clubs riders who started finished.

Pictured at the start of the 100-mile event are Rob Bignell, Graham Edwards, Chris Howarth, Ian Langford and Andrew Staton. Godrey Nash and David Taylor also rode and finished. Rob Bignell, top 10 and Graham Edwards, top 15 were the clubs best finishers.

In the 50-mile event which took in the first part of the 100-mile ride the club had three riders. They were Ian Jenkins and the clubs two sponsors: Steve Jones (Govilon Garage) and Simon Bailey from Bike Base. All three completed the course.
Three club riders took part in a 2-day Audax event on the 15th and 16th July. Dave Hayhurst, Nick and Bill Kenwright, along with Dave Panting of CC Abergavenny rode the 85 miles to Sealyham hall, near Haverfordwest.
Riding over the Cambrian Hills to the coast and then over the Preseli Hills required several stops for drinks and ice cream. The group stayed at the Sealyham Activity Centre overnight and then returned home on Sunday over a slightly different and longer route - up the coast and then inland via Lampeter before arriving at Brecon at 5pm. 185 miles of hard riding through some of the most beautiful countryside on quiet roads.
